Boulder is currently revisiting its General Plan

What is a General Plan? What does it mean to me?

A General Plan is a document that the state requires each municipality to produce and update every five years. It is not a law or an ordinance. Rather, it lays out the “vision,” preferences, and priorities the town wants to place on things such as housing, economic development, land use, community services, “look and feel” of the town, and whatever else people want to add in.
Although it is not a binding document in terms of requirements, it does help establish a foundation by which town policies can be discussed and enacted, as set forth in ordinances and other town actions or activities.
When done well, the General Plan can function as a roadmap to help people progress toward a common goal. When done thoughtlessly, a General Plan is just a mumbo-jumbo of meaningless and empty words. In other words, it can be a tool or it can be a waste of time and paper. But it does get written and does stay in effect for five years, regardless.
The town survey, which the Planning Commission conducted last summer, was an attempt to gather input to help revise the General Plan. In addition to that, the Planning Commission is currently discussing revisions to the Plan in their monthly meetings.
Now is really a critical time for residents to get involved in the discussion. This includes residents of Boulder Town, as well as the residents in the unincorporated areas of Boulder, all of whom the General Plan addresses.
A copy of the current plan (1997) is available in the Library, or can be obtained from the Town Clerk, Judi Davis.

The general plan is also available for download as a .pdf file. You will need Abobe Acrobat Reader to view it.

Boulder General Plan This redlined file shows the latest revisions to the 1997 plan (as of October 24, 2006).Generally, the blue strikeout text shows deleted material. The red text is inserted, or new, material. Chapters 7 and 8 (Land Use and Housing, respectively) are still in major revision stage, and the pages in this version do not reflect a new tabular formatting that will more clearly show Goals/ Policy/ Implementation strategies.

Note from Sue Fearon: I have created a page where I will post comments regarding the general plan. It is linked below. You are welcome to e-mail me you thoughts, ideas, comments, solutions and I will post them. I will not edit them but I will credit them to you.
