Burr Trail Road
The Burr Trail begins in the town of Boulder and travels 66 miles through the center of the Circle Cliffs Upwarp and Capitol Reef National Park. It ends at Bullfrog Marina on Lake Powell. It is named after John Atlantic Burr, who built the original cattle trail through this wild country in the late 1800's to expand grazing opportunities for Boulder cattlemen.
It was upgraded to a jeep road during the uranium boom of the 1950's, and in recent years has been upgraded to an all weather road. The majority of the road has been "Chip Sealed" but there is still a 17 mile section inside Capitol Reef National Park that is still in it's primitive state. Because of this, the section inside the park is still a fair weather road. Heavy rains can turn the clay surface to slippery muck in short order, and a sudden winter snowstorm could also leave you stranded. Use caution during bad weather!
This route travels through primitive country with no services along it's entire length. Because of this you should always carry plenty of water and gasoline. This route is not recommended for motor homes or vehicles pulling trailers due to the steep winding switchbacks through Waterpocket Fold, and the rough nature of the road inside the Park. The road log begins at the junction of Highway 12 in the town of Boulder and travels eastward.
